Motorboat Carbon Removal
Motorboat Carbon Removal
25 kg per 10 NM by motorboat
Couldn't load pickup availability
Remove your boating emissions today. Add one 25 kg unit for every 10 nautical miles you travel by motorboat up to 150 hp.
The CO₂ is physically removed from the atmosphere and durably stored for centuries, certified by Puro.earth. You receive public registry proof within one month of purchase.
25 kg of CO₂ removal covers the full life-cycle global warming impact of a typical small motorboat (up to 150 hp) travelling 10 nautical miles (18.5 km or 11.5 miles): building the boat and engine, producing the fuel and burning it.
Choose the amount based on total horsepower of the boat engines:
- Up to 150 hp (110 kW): one 25 kg unit per 10 NM.
- 150 to 300 hp (110 to 220 kW): multiply units by 2.
- 300 to 500 hp (220 to 370 kW): multiply by 4.
- Over 500 hp (370 kW): use Fuel Carbon Removal with the litres you fill up.
Examples:
- 10 NM with a 60 hp outboard: 1 unit, 25 kg of CO₂, €4.95
- Day trip of 30 NM in a 250 hp boat: 6 units, 150 kg of CO₂, €29.70
- A season of 240 NM in a 100 hp day cruiser: 24 units, 600 kg of CO₂, €118.80
The 25 kg of CO₂ emissions per 10 NM is a rounded average for a typical small motorboat at cruising speed, based on boat tests from the United States and Finland, official fuel life-cycle values and boat-building assessments. See detailed calculations below.
The price reflects what durable carbon removal costs: the amount of CO₂ you purchase has already been locked away from the atmosphere for centuries, which costs more than funding projects that aim to reduce future emissions. See what the price is based on →
Calculation data and methods:
-
The typical motorboat is small, with a single outboard
In the United States, 95% of the 11.9 million registered boats are under 26 feet (7.9 m). In Finland, the median registered motorboat is about 6 m long with a 37 kW (50 hp) engine.

Fuel consumption per nautical mile, Finnish boat tests
Buster Lx with a 60 hp outboard: about 0.5 litres per nautical mile at 15 to 23 knots. Buster XL with 100 hp: under 0.8 litres at 17 to 30 knots. Buster XXL with 150 hp, driven economically: 0.5 to 0.6 litres. An 8-metre day cruiser with 300 hp: under 1.2 litres at 30 knots and just over 2.0 litres at its 50-knot top speed. A 260 hp diesel cruiser: 1.13 litres at 27 knots. These are tests by a boat maker and boating magazines; no public institution publishes fuel use per nautical mile for leisure boats.

Fuel consumption per nautical mile, United States
A 23-foot boat with a 300 hp outboard: 27.2 mph at 8.3 US gallons per hour, which is 3.28 miles per gallon, or 1.33 litres per nautical mile (1.151 ÷ 3.28 × 3.785).

Fuel life-cycle emissions: petrol 3.04 kg, diesel 3.57 kg CO₂e per litre
California's regulatory values of 99.44 g (pump petrol) and 100.45 g (diesel) CO₂e per MJ, with energy content of 115.83 MJ and 134.47 MJ per US gallon of 3.785 litres. They cover producing, delivering and burning the fuel. The petrol value is above the 2.97 kg per litre we calculate from IPCC defaults for 2-stroke outboards, which includes their higher methane emissions.

Building the boat and engine: about 5 kg CO₂e per 10 nautical miles for a small boat
A life-cycle assessment of a 6.4 m fibreglass boat with electric propulsion puts its total at 7.12 tonnes of CO₂e. Hull and deck construction is 42.3% of that, about 3 tonnes. With a petrol outboard in place of the electric drive and battery, we estimate the whole boat at roughly 5 tonnes (our estimate).
A peer-reviewed study of a 4.8 m fibreglass hull lists 277 kg of glass fibre and 222 kg of polyester resin, which we estimate at about 1.5 tonnes for the bare hull (our estimate).
Recreational boat engines run only 35 to 48 hours a year, and a typical day cruiser lasts 30 years. A typical Finnish boater uses about 200 litres of fuel a summer, which at 0.6 litres per mile is about 330 nautical miles a year, or 10,000 nautical miles over the boat's life. 5,000 kg ÷ 10,000 nautical miles = 0.5 kg per nautical mile, or 5 kg per 10 nautical miles. For boats of 150 to 300 hp we use 8 kg, and for 300 to 500 hp 15 kg (our estimates).

Calculation per 10 nautical miles:
- Up to 150 hp: 60 hp boat 0.5 × 10 × 3.04 = 15.2 kg + 5 kg boat = 20.2 kg. 100 hp boat 0.8 × 10 × 3.04 = 24.3 kg + 5 kg = 29.3 kg. 150 hp boat 0.6 × 10 × 3.04 = 18.2 kg + 5 kg = 23.2 kg. Average 24.2 kg.
- 150 to 300 hp: 300 hp day cruiser at 30 knots 1.2 × 10 × 3.04 = 36.5 kg + 8 kg = 44.5 kg. 300 hp US boat 1.33 × 10 × 3.04 = 40.4 kg + 8 kg = 48.4 kg. 260 hp diesel cruiser 1.13 × 10 × 3.57 = 40.3 kg + 8 kg = 48.3 kg. Covered by 2 units (50 kg).
- 300 to 500 hp: the 300 hp day cruiser at its 50-knot top speed, 2.0 × 10 × 3.04 = 60.8 kg + 15 kg = 75.8 kg. Scaling the 300 hp boats to 500 hp at cruising speed (our assumption: fuel per mile rises in proportion to engine power): 1.2 × 500 ÷ 300 = 2.0 litres, which is 60.8 kg + 15 kg = 75.8 kg; 1.33 × 500 ÷ 300 = 2.22 litres, which is 67.5 kg + 15 kg = 82.5 kg. Covered by 4 units (100 kg).
--> A rounded average of 25 kg per 10 nautical miles is used here for a motorboat up to 150 hp, 2 units for 150 to 300 hp and 4 units for 300 to 500 hp. Above 500 hp, fuel use varies too widely for a per-mile figure, so we use the litres burned instead (Fuel Carbon Removal). At €0.198 per kg, 25 kg comes to €4.95.

Why Durable Carbon Removal is Essential
Global temperatures are record high, causing weather extremes and climate instability. This is due to excess atmospheric CO₂ levels that continue to rise. Reducing future emissions cannot solve this alone anymore, so durable carbon removal is required.
