What a CO₂ Removal Certificate (CORC) represents

For every net metric tonne of CO₂ removed and stored, Puro.earth issues a CO₂ Removal Certificate (CORC) in their public registry.

Each CORC confirms that the carbon removal is:

  • Ex-post - the removal has already occurred
  • Verified - audited under science-based standards
  • Additional - would not happen otherwise
  • Durable - stored for at least 100 years
  • Traceable - managed in a public registry
  • Unique - tied to a single, completed removal

Public registry and retirement

Puro.earth operates a public registry, which is the core mechanism that makes certified carbon removal transparent, traceable, and verifiable by anyone.

In the registry, all CO₂ Removal Certificates are issued, tracked, and retired.

Issuance means that the carbon removal and storage according to Puro.earth methodologies has been verified by third-party auditors.

Retirement means the certificate has been permanently assigned to the buyer and closed in the public registry, so the same carbon removal cannot be sold, transferred, or counted twice.

What proof looks like

Each CORC retirement registry record shows:

  • the amount of retired CORCs
  • the carbon removal method and project
  • the beneficiary and purpose of removal
  • the Remove Carbon Today batch ID
  • the order numbers retired
  • the retirement status and date

This confirms that the CO₂ has been removed from the atmosphere and claimed only once.
