Calculation data and methods:

1. Direct CO₂ emissions, Europe: 9.54 kg per passenger-hour (TTW)
   The CO₂ from fuel burned on board, averaged across 405 passenger and car ferries of 5,000 GT and over that report verified emissions and passenger numbers to the EU. On overnight routes the figure is 11.01 kg. This is our calculation from the register; the method is in point 7.

2. Direct CO₂ emissions, US: 11.1 kg per passenger-hour (TTW)
   In 2023 the 43 US public ferry systems carried 458.4 million passenger-miles on 53.9 million gallons of diesel, at an average speed of 9.3 mph. At 10.18 kg of CO₂ per gallon of diesel, that is 11.1 kg per passenger-hour (our calculation). We use this higher figure.

3. Upstream and other warming emissions: ×1.38 (WTT + non-CO₂)
   Producing and delivering marine fuel adds 23.5%. That's from the IMO's life-cycle defaults of 14.1 to 17.7 g CO₂e per MJ, weighted by the global ferry fuel mix reported to the IMO. Black carbon, methane and nitrous oxide from ship engines add 14.9% on the same fuel mix. Both are our calculation.

4. Ship building: +12.5%
   Materials and shipbuilding average 11% of a ship's life-cycle emissions, and operation 88%. 11 ÷ 88 = 12.5% on top of operation (our calculation).

5. Food on board: 0.36 kg per hour
   A high-meat diet is 7.19 kg CO₂e per day, spread per hour on board. We add 0.20 crew meals per passenger: Silja Serenade has 264 crew for 1,304 passengers on board on average (EU register). 7.19 ÷ 24 × 1.20 = 0.36 kg (our allowance).

6. High-speed ferries: 25.0 kg per passenger-hour (TTW)
   The 30 ferries in the EU register that average 25 knots or more. On the same basis as the calculation below: 24.99 × 1.38 × 1.125 + 0.36 = 39.16 kg, covered by 2 units (40 kg).

7. How the EU register figures are calculated:

   Download the 2025 file, open the "2025 Full ERs" sheet and keep "Ro-pax ship". For each ship:
   • (a) distance (nautical miles) = Total CO₂ emissions [m tonnes] × 1,000 ÷ CO₂ emissions per distance [kg CO₂ / n mile];
   • (b) passenger-nautical miles = CO₂ emissions assigned to Passenger transport [m tonnes] × 1,000,000 ÷ CO₂ emissions per transport work (pax) [g CO₂ / pax · n miles];
   • (c) average passengers on board = b ÷ a;
   • (d) passenger-hours = c × Time spent at sea [hours].
   Divide the total passenger CO₂ (kg) by the total passenger-hours. We leave out 13 of 418 ships: 11 have no passenger figures, and 2 imply under 1 or over 4,000 passengers on board.
   • High-speed ferries: a ÷ time at sea of 25 knots or more.
   • Overnight routes: the 89 ferries of operators such as Tallink Silja, Viking Line, Color Line, DFDS, Stena Line, Finnlines, Brittany Ferries, GNV, Grimaldi, Tirrenia, Corsica Linea and Minoan Lines.
8. Calculation:
   1. Direct CO₂ (US figure): 11.13 kg
   2. Upstream and other warming (×1.38): 11.13 kg × 0.38 = 4.23 kg
   3. Ship building (+12.5%): 15.36 kg × 0.125 = 1.92 kg
   4. Food: 0.36 kg
      --> Total: 17.64 kg, rounded up to 20 kg. At €0.198 per kg, 20 kg comes to €3.96, priced at €3.95.
