Cruise Carbon Removal

This product removes the total global warming impact of one passenger travelling on a cruise ship for one hour.

25 kg of CO₂ is physically removed from the atmosphere and durably stored for 100+ years, with proof provided within one month of purchase.

The 25 kg is a comprehensive global average of the full life-cycle and climate impact. Unlike standard calculators, our value includes direct fuel combustion, upstream fuel production, non-CO₂ climate forcers (like methane slip), and the significant carbon footprint of the "floating hotel" life-support systems, including food supply chains and waste management.

Calculation data and methods:

1. Direct CO₂ Emissions: 390 g/pkm (TTW)
   This "Tank-to-Wake" (TTW) number represents the direct CO₂ emissions from the fuel burned for both propulsion and the ship's "hotel load" (electricity, AC, and amenities). The 390 g per passenger-kilometer (pkm) is derived from peer-reviewed analysis of real-world cruise operations across global fleets, accounting for actual passenger occupancy and vessel energy intensity.

2. Non-CO₂ Climate Forcers: 15% Uplift
   While shipping does not have a standardized Radiative Forcing Index (RFI) like aviation, the climate impact of black carbon (soot), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), and "methane slip" from LNG-powered vessels is significant. The conservative 15% uplift accounts for these non-CO₂ warming effects, aligned with the latest maritime climate impact research.

3. Upstream CO₂ Emissions: 20% (WTT)
   The "Well-to-Tank" (WTT) ratio accounts for the carbon footprint of marine fuels before they reach the ship, including crude oil extraction, refining, and global transport. The 20% uplift ensures we account for the full life-cycle of the fuel, consistent with the IMO’s latest Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) framework for marine fuels.

4. On-board Life Support & Supply Chain: 2.2 kg/hour
   Cruising involves high-intensity "lifestyle" emissions. This accounts for the supply chain of the food and beverage services (roughly 12 lbs of food per person/day), desalination of freshwater, and off-ship waste processing. This ensures the removal covers your entire on-board environmental footprint, not just the movement of the ship.

5. Average Cruise Speed: 35 km/h
   The average distance a cruise ship covers in one hour. The global average transit speed of approximately 19 knots (35 km/h) allows us to convert distance-based emissions into a standardized 1-hour unit that remains conservative even during periods of "slow steaming" near ports.
