What does it cost to properly offset your CO₂ emissions?
(Last updated: September 2026)
Short answer: €198 per tonne, €0.198 per kg, including VAT.
Remove Carbon Today sells only certified, ex-post carbon removal, which means the CO₂ has already been physically removed from the atmosphere and durably stored for centuries, and the CO₂ removal credit has been issued in the Puro.earth public registry, where we retire it under your order number and send you the retirement link within one month of your purchase.
Traditional carbon offsets do a different job than carbon removal, and therefore are priced differently. This page explains both.
If you are looking to offset, neutralise or compensate your carbon footprint, you are asking the right question. The answer is carbon removal.

Cost breakdown
Over the six months to July 2026, 82% of our net revenue paid for the carbon removal itself, 7% covered our operational cost to run the service, and 11% was our operating margin, which we spent on marketing to invite new people worldwide to join the effort.
Cost of removal (82%) covers what we pay our suppliers for CO₂ that has already been removed from the air and durably stored, and the fee to retire the removals.
Cost of operations (7%) covers registry fees, payment processing, software, accounting and running the service.
Operating margin (11%) is what remains after those two costs, and we spend it on marketing to reach new people who want to properly offset their carbon footprint.
Our cost breakdown is calculated net of Value Added Tax (VAT), which is collected at each country's rate and passed on to the tax authority and never reaches us.
For full transparency, we calculate the figures from our accounts as a rolling six-month average, so a single unusual month cannot distort the picture.
Remove Carbon Today is a self-funded and bootstrapped startup, with a lean team. There is no outside investment and no investor return to pay, which is one reason the cost of running the service stays small and we can sell the removal at a lean margin.
What does certified carbon removal cost for corporates?
Every carbon removal we sell is certified by Puro.earth, a leading crediting platform for engineered carbon removal, majority-owned by Nasdaq. Since 2019, Puro.earth has certified more than 100 projects and issued over 1.5 million tonnes of carbon removal, of which more than a million have already been retired.
The corporate transactions at Puro.earth registry set the market price. Based on the transactions, Nasdaq publishes the price indexes, including the Nasdaq CORC Biochar Price Index (CORCCHAR), which is the reference price for certified biochar carbon removal. The index shows what corporate buyers actually pay for certified carbon removal, €129.21 per tonne (July 2026).
Our purchases are counted in Nasdaq's price index. We buy already-issued removal to match the orders our customers place, since every tonne is retired on their behalf. As we are in our early days and our volumes are still small, we currently pay a bit above the index. The more people remove their emissions with us, the larger the volumes and the better the terms.

What impacts the price of carbon removal?
Carbon removal means physically removing carbon dioxide (CO₂) that is already in the atmosphere, and storing it in a stable form for the long term. It is also called carbon dioxide removal (CDR) or carbon drawdown.
Most durable carbon removal today is biochar, made of biomass, such as plant waste. When plants grow, they pull CO₂ out of the air. And when they die, the CO₂ returns back to the air. But, through a process called pyrolysis the plant waste can be turned into a stable, solid form, biochar, which locks the CO₂ away for centuries and also helps improve agricultural productivity when put back to soil.
Three things impact the price of certified carbon removal:
Carbon removal is physical work. Physically drawing down and locking away CO₂ from the atmosphere takes a lot of effort. Biomass is sourced and processed, and biochar is transported and durably stored. That requires facilities, machinery, resources and energy that all add to the cost.
Every removed net tonne is measured, reported and verified. Accredited third-party auditors verify how much CO₂ was removed, net of lifecycle emissions, before certification. The CO₂ removal certificate is then issued in a public registry for every net tonne removed, and tracked to retirement so it can be claimed only once. The ecosystem and evidence is part of the product, and part of the cost.
The industry is still evolving. Durable carbon removal only happens because corporates are investing in long-term offtake agreements that fund development of the engineered methods. While CO₂ is already being removed, many suppliers continue to expand their facilities and scale their operations, so buying today also enables that scaling.
Why are carbon offsets cheaper?
"Carbon offset" most commonly refers to traditional offsets that aim to reduce or avoid future emissions.
A traditional offset credit models the future emissions that would have happened without it, and sells the difference. So, offset projects aim to reduce the rate at which future emissions grow, but cannot take back the excess CO₂ that is already emitted in the atmosphere and warming the planet, which certified carbon removal does.
Both are essential - reducing future emissions and removing the excess CO₂ today - but they serve fundamentally different roles, and that is why removal costs more.

Is it cheaper to reduce emissions than to remove them?
Yes, and that is why continuing to reduce emissions is so important.
But some of our CO₂ waste just cannot be avoided.
Burning fossil fuels emits CO₂ in the atmosphere, and it stays there for centuries. Our oceans and plants can only absorb about half of our current emissions, and there is already too much CO₂ in the atmosphere, warming our planet.
So, we need to start treating our unavoidable CO₂ like any other waste and clean it up properly. You likely already pay for cleaning your trash and wastewater, and now you can do the same with the unavoidable CO₂ waste and pay to clean it properly through certified carbon removal.
Reduce what you can. Remove what you cannot avoid.
