The 20 kg of CO₂ emissions per 100 km is a rounded, conservative figure for a typical motorcycle (over 150 cc) worldwide, built on official UK and US data and ICCT life-cycle research. If your motorcycle uses more fuel than average, multiply your units by 1.5. See detailed calculations below.

Calculation data and methods:

1. United Kingdom, burning the fuel: 113.7 g CO₂e per km for the average motorbike, 132.5 g for large motorbikes over 500 cc
   The UK Government's factors: 0.18293 kg per mile for the average motorbike (2024 edition) and 0.21326 kg per mile for large motorbikes (2025 edition), divided by 1.609 km per mile.

2. United Kingdom, producing the fuel: 29.6 g CO₂e per km for the average motorbike, 36.8 g for large motorbikes
   The UK Government's well-to-tank factors, covering extraction, refining and transport of the fuel before it reaches the tank. 2024 edition for the average motorbike; 2021 edition, the latest published figure we could open, for large motorbikes.

3. United States: 44.0 miles per US gallon, which converts to 5.35 litres per 100 km
   The US Federal Highway Administration's figure for all motorcycles on US roads in 2023. Conversion: 100 km is 62.14 miles. 62.14 ÷ 44.0 = 1.41 US gallons, and 1.41 × 3.785 litres = 5.35 litres.

4. United States, fuel life-cycle emissions: 3.04 kg CO₂e per litre of pump petrol
   California's regulatory life-cycle value of 99.44 g CO₂e per MJ at 115.83 MJ per US gallon of 3.785 litres. It covers producing, delivering and burning the fuel.

5. Building the motorcycle: 1.0 kg CO₂e per 100 km
   ICCT gives 4.9 g per km for building a small motorcycle in India. Motorcycles over 150 cc are heavier, so we double it (our assumption): 9.8 g per km, or 1.0 kg per 100 km.

6. Calculation per 100 km:
   1. UK average: (113.7 g + 29.6 g) × 100 km = 14.3 kg, plus 1.0 kg = 15.3 kg.
   2. UK large motorcycles: (132.5 g + 36.8 g) × 100 km = 16.9 kg, plus 1.0 kg = 17.9 kg.
   3. United States: 5.35 litres × 3.04 kg = 16.3 kg, plus 1.0 kg = 17.3 kg.
