What is Carbon Removal?
What is carbon removal, or carbon dioxide removal (CDR)?
Carbon removal focuses on the carbon dioxide that is already emitted into the air and warming our planet.
It is the process of taking carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere and storing it for long periods in a stable form, also known as carbon dioxide removal (CDR) or carbon drawdown.
Our store focuses on high-quality carbon removals that are scientifically verified and certified through Puro.earth and that capture and store CO₂ durably for a minimum of 100 years.
Carbon removal is distinct from emissions reduction and is a necessary complementary strategy for achieving net zero to reverse the climate change.

What’s the difference between removal, reduction, avoidance and offsets?
Carbon removal focuses on the carbon dioxide that is already emitted into the air and warming our planet. It uses science-based methods to remove and durably store the carbon.
Reductions, on the other hand, focus on reducing the emissions compared to a past practice, for example by switching to clean energy or transportation, or buying second-hand.
Avoidance means activities that prevent the future CO₂ emissions from occurring in the first place, for example flying less, or avoiding cutting forests.
Offsetting is a general term used in various ways to refer to reducing or avoiding emissions, or removing emitted CO₂.
To reverse the climate change and reach net zero, we need to first reduce and avoid as much of our emissions as we can - and then remove the rest.
Our online store provides an opportunity for anyone to do the latter - to remove your carbon footprint today and on an ongoing basis.

Why should I remove carbon if I'm already reducing my footprint?
We need to remove carbon dioxide already emitted into the air, because reducing alone isn’t fast enough.
Even if the world stopped burning fossil fuels tomorrow, the CO₂ already in the atmosphere would keep warming the planet for centuries. That’s why scientists say we must both reduce what we emit and remove what’s already there. Reductions and avoidance will slow down future warming, but only timely removals now can reverse some of the damage that’s been done.
Carbon removal gives us a way to deal with our historic emissions and start moving toward net zero and then to net negative emissions.
Every ton removed today helps lower the risks of weather extremes, will help cool the climate, and buy time for further reductions to take effect. Your actions today matter.

How is this better than reforestration or planting trees?
Reforestration and planting trees will help remove carbon dioxide once the trees are grown up - but this takes time, which we don't have.
Trees remove carbon only for a time. Once the tree dies, is lost to fire or disease or is cut, the carbon they removed will be back on the carbon cycle again. This means that storing carbon in forests is slower, less durable and less secure.
On the other hand, the high-quality carbon removals that our store offer focus on verified, science-based methods that are designed for measurable, long-lived storage of over 100 years (e.g. biochar or enhanced rock weathering).

What can I do?
Why is acting now so important?
We’re seeing the climate changing faster than expected and the extremes becoming more frequent and severe with intensified floods, storms and heat-waves.
The Paris Agreement goal is to hold global warming well below 2°C and pursue 1.5°C - but every year we reach a new record-high temperature and CO₂ level. The fast global warming is likely to trigger the climate tipping points with no turning back, unless we act now.
To reverse the climate change, we need to remove the excessive carbon dioxide from the air to avoid more severe consequences. Every month matters. And every action matters.
How do I know my carbon footprint?
Your personal carbon footprint means the climate pollution caused by your lifestyle over a year.
It is based on how you heat or cool your home, how you move from one place to another, what you eat and what products you buy and use.
It is measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide - your annual greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere due to your activities.
The average carbon footprint varies significantly by country, income level and lifestyle. In North America, the annual average carbon footprint per person is up to 20 metric tons, while in the EU it is close to 10 tons, in China around 8 tons, in South and South-East Asia around 2.6 tons and Sub-Saharan Africa around 1.6 tons.
For more details, check out the dedicated Your Footprint page with examples and links to carbon footprint calculators.
How much should I remove?
You can remove any amount of your choice - you decide!
You can start small, even just a few kilograms at a time, as many small streams make a large river. Or, you can go big by removing your life-time footprint or even beyond.
You can set up weekly or monthly removals that add up to your annual CO₂ emissions (after reducing what you can) and reach your personal net zero on an ongoing basis. Or, you can make a one-time or recurring removal today of your annual footprint.
Or if you'd like to be more focused, you can remove the CO₂ emissions of your particular meal, your shopping or your flights.
You can mix and match our products from 1 kg, 10 kg, 100 kg to 1 ton to hit your target precisely. And you can always come back to remove more.
Your actions today matter.
For more details, check out the dedicated Your Footprint page with examples and links to carbon footprint calculators.
Can I set up a monthly removals?
Yes, you can. You can mix and match the products to select the amount of carbon you want to remove today, and you can set your recurring removals at the product page.
You can set up weekly or monthly removals that add up to your annual CO₂ emissions (after reducing what you can) and reach your personal net zero on an ongoing basis. Or, you can make a one-time or recurring removal today of your annual footprint.
You also can choose to set the weekly or monthly removals at a lower level - anything that's feasible for you - while you work your way towards the net zero. Any small amount contributes to our combat for climate change.
The recurring subscriptions auto-renew but you can skip or cancel anytime.
Also, giving net zero as a gift is great idea for holidays or birthdays. You can make a one-time or recurring removal of the annual footprint and give it as a gift to your loved one.
Gift removals purchased before 15th of December, 2025, will be completed in time for Christmas. You will get the confirmation email and the link to the registry by 19th of December to confirm the completion and can give a gift that's actually removed.
What do you do?
In practice, how do you buy the carbon removals on my behalf?
To keep things simple, the carbon removals we offer are all certified by puro.earth, the leading crediting platform, aligned with Oxford Offsetting Principles and focused exclusively on carbon removals.
Puro partners with suppliers, whose operations capture more carbon dioxide from the air than they emit. Their net negative emissions are calculated and verified, and Puro issues CO₂ Removal Certificates (CORCs) to these suppliers.
A CORC is an independently verified document that confirms that 1 metric ton of carbon dioxide has been removed from the atmosphere and durably stored for over 100 years using one of the Puro's standardizes removal methods.
Once the supplier has CORCs credited by Puro, they can sell them to other businesses, whose operations are net positive and who want to neutralise their carbon footprint and reach net zero.
Until now, these CORCs have only been available for corporations, not individuals. And this is where we come in.
We partner with selected CORC suppliers and buy CORCs from them. And we sell them onwards to individuals, like you, in small (or big) quantities on our online store.
So, in practice, for every full ton of CO₂ removal sold at our store, we buy one CORC from the partner supplier. And we retire it in Puro's registry, so that we can send you a transparent link to confirm that your carbon removal is completed.
We are open to expanding to other carbon removal crediting platforms later on, as long as they fulfil our strict requirements and commitment for real, measurable and verified carbon removals.
Why are you different from other climate or “offset” sites?
We offer an easy, immediate and proven way for individuals to neutralise their personal carbon footprint today.
We serve individual customers, like you, instead of corporates or institutions.
We focus on high-quality carbon removals and cleaning the excess CO₂ from the air through certified, science-based projects that have a durability of over 100 years, instead of reductions, avoidance or general offsets.
We commit to clear timelines - we complete your carbon removal as soon as possible, and in any case within a month from purchase, while most other platforms fund future reductions or removals that take months or years to complete.
We provide transparent proof of removal through a link to the Puro.earth public registry to track the completion or your removal.
We offer flexibility - you can choose to remove a small or a big amount, one time or recurring, and as often as you like. And we complete the removal on your behalf.
We continuously improve our approach based on customer insights to best fulfil on your needs. Please share your feedback with us - we'd like to hear from you!
How do you choose the carbon removal projects?
We work with partners and projects that meet recognised standards, independent verification, and community safeguards for carbon removal.
To keep things simple, we have started with biochar projects verified by Puro.earth, the leading global crediting platform.
Biochar volumes have now reached levels that enable practical and affordable carbon removal offerings for individuals. We have selected biochar projects that have CORCs (CO₂ Removal Credits) immediately available so that we can keep our promise to you to remove your carbon today.
Biochar is made of biomass, usually agricultural waste, which is turned into a stable form through pyrolysis, storing the carbon for centuries or longer. Biochar is measurable and scalable, and can be re-used in agriculture to improve soil health and reduce acidity. Many biochar projects also have a positive social impact and improve the livelihoods of local farmers and their families.
We are open to expanding to other carbon removal methods later, as long as they fulfil our strict requirements and commitment for real, measurable and verified carbon removals.
Read more about the projects on the Meet Our Partners page.
What is the price based on?
The price per kilogram reflects the real average price we pay for each CORC, a ton of CO₂ removed, plus our operating margin of 10% to run and continuously improve our service for you.
Compared to offsets focused on reduction or avoidance, the actual high-quality carbon removals (like biochar) usually cost more because they fund the real and measured removal and durable storing of CO₂ from the air for over 100 years, which makes an immediate impact on climate. Furthermore, your investment will help accelerate the carbon removal projects and scale the impact quicker.
As the removal projects scale and volumes increase, the costs are expected to come down, and we are committed to reflecting that in the price.

We exclusively focus on carbon removals that meet the Oxford Offsetting Principles and that are verfied and certified by Puro.earth, the leading global crediting platform.
At our store, you can trust your carbon removal is real and immediate. Within a month of your purchase, we will send you a link to the Puro.earth public registry to confirm the completion.
Who checks that these projects are real and not greenwashing?
The carbon removals we offer are all verified by puro.earth, the leading crediting platform, aligned with Oxford Offsetting Principles and focused exclusively on carbon removals.
Puro partners with suppliers, whose operations capture more carbon dioxide from the air than they emit. Their net negative emissions are calculated and verified, and Puro issues CO₂ Removal Certificates (CORCs) to these suppliers.
A CORC is an independently verified document that confirms that 1 metric ton of carbon dioxide has been removed and durably stored from the atmosphere. All of the Puro Standard carbon removal methods guarantee durable, stable carbon storage of 100+ years, some even thousands of years.
Puro's CORCs are issued ex-post based on CO₂ removal activities that have been independently verified by third party prior to issuing the CORC. It is issued in the Puro Registry to the supplier, purchased by the buyer, and retired once the buyer has reported its usage.
We partner with selected CORC suppliers and buy CORCs from them. And we sell them onwards to individuals, like you, in small (or big) quantities on our online store.
For every full ton of carbon removal sold at our store, we buy one CORC from the partner supplier. And as the buyer, we then retire the CORC in Puro's registry, so that we can send you a transparent link within a month of your purchase to confirm that your carbon removal is completed.

Why does it matter?
Why should we care about climate change?
There are regular scientific assessments made on climate change, its implications and potential future risks by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It was created by the United Nations and the World Meteorological Organization in 1988 and it has 195 Member countries.
The IPCC concludes that climate change is human-caused, through emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide.
The climate change is already causing many extreme incidents in every region across the globe. And the global temperatures continue to hit record-high levels every year. The risks are escalating, and every increment of global warming will intensify multiple and concurrent climate hazards.
"Climate change is a threat to human well-being and planetary health. There is a rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all. The choices and actions implemented in this decade will have impacts now and for thousands of years." (2023)
Limiting global warming requires net zero carbon footprint through rapid emission reductions and scaling of carbon removals.
We need to act now. And every action counts. You can start today at our store.

What are the global climate goals in the Paris Agreement?
The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty to combat climate change. It was adopted by 195 countries at the UN Climate Change Conference in 2015.
The Paris Agreement objective is “holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above preindustrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.”
To meet the objective we must achieve net zero carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by 2050 along with rapid reductions in other greenhouse gas emissions. This means substantially reducing emissions and balancing any residual emissions with carbon removals on an ongoing basis.
Your actions matter. At our store, you can remove your remaining carbon footprint today and help avoid the climate crisis that we are facing.

What do Oxford Offsetting Principles say about net zero future?
As part of their net zero climate strategies, many companies and institutions are relying on carbon credits to offset their residual emissions.
The Oxford Offsetting Principles outline how offsetting needs to be approached to help achieve a net zero society. The four principles are:
1. Cut emissions, ensure the environmental integrity of credits used to achieve net zero, and regularly revise your offsetting strategy as best practice evolves
2. Transition to carbon removal offsetting for any residual emissions by the global net zero target date
3. Shift to removals with durable storage (low risk of reversal) to compensate any
residual emissions by the net zero target date.
4. Support the development of innovative and integrated approaches to achieving
net zero
