35 kg of CO₂ removal covers the full life-cycle global warming impact of 10 litres of petrol (gasoline) or diesel: producing the fuel, delivering it to the pump and burning it in any engine.

Use this product for anything that runs on petrol or diesel: a car, motorcycle, scooter, boat, mower, generator or snowmobile. Choose your fuel removal in 10-litre units.

The 35 kg of CO₂ emissions per 10 litres of fuel purchased is a rounded global figure, built on the IPCC's global default values and the official life-cycle values of the European Union, California and Brazil, with a Chinese study as a cross-check. It sits above every petrol value, including 2-stroke engines, and every diesel value except two: California's diesel and diesel burned in machinery, both 35.7 kg, or 2% more. 1. EU life-cycle emissions: 94 g CO₂e per MJ for fossil petrol and diesel
   The EU's legal fossil fuel reference value, covering crude oil extraction, transport, refining, distribution and combustion. Energy content: petrol 32 MJ, diesel 36 MJ per litre.

2. California life-cycle emissions: pump petrol 99.44 g, diesel 100.45 g CO₂e per MJ
   The California Air Resources Board's regulatory values, with energy content of 115.83 MJ (petrol) and 134.47 MJ (diesel) per US gallon of 3.785 litres.

3. Brazil life-cycle emissions: petrol 87.4 g, diesel 86.5 g CO₂e per MJ
   The values used by Brazil's national fuel regulator ANP in the RenovaBio programme, with energy content of 32.31 MJ (petrol) and 35.52 MJ (diesel) per litre.

4. China: petrol 2.37 kg CO₂ per litre from burning, 0.40 kg from production
   The combustion factor is from China's national standard GB 27999-2019. The production factor is from a 2023 life-cycle study.

5. IPCC global defaults: burning petrol emits 69.3 g CO₂ per MJ, diesel 74.1 g
   The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's default factors for national greenhouse gas inventories.
   Methane and nitrous oxide add 2.8 g CO₂e per MJ for petrol in cars, 5.1 g in 2-stroke engines, 1.1 g for diesel in road vehicles and 7.7 g for diesel in machinery and generators. We convert them with the IPCC's warming values (methane 28, nitrous oxide 265).
   Producing the fuel adds 18.3 g CO₂e per MJ for petrol and 17.5 g for diesel, from the UK Government's well-to-tank factors. Energy content as in point 1.

6. Calculation per 10 litres:
   1. EU: petrol 94 × 32 = 3,008 g per litre = 30.1 kg per 10 litres. Diesel 94 × 36 = 3,384 g per litre = 33.8 kg per 10 litres.
   2. California: petrol 99.44 × 115.83 ÷ 3.785 = 3,043 g per litre = 30.4 kg per 10 litres. Diesel 100.45 × 134.47 ÷ 3.785 = 3,568 g per litre = 35.7 kg per 10 litres.
   3. Brazil: petrol 87.4 × 32.31 = 2,824 g per litre = 28.2 kg per 10 litres. Diesel 86.5 × 35.52 = 3,072 g per litre = 30.7 kg per 10 litres.
   4. China: petrol 2.37 + 0.40 = 2.77 kg per litre = 27.7 kg per 10 litres.
   5. IPCC and UK: petrol in cars (69.3 + 2.8 + 18.3) × 32 = 2,893 g per litre, or 28.9 kg per 10 litres. Petrol in 2-stroke engines (69.3 + 5.1 + 18.3) × 32 = 2,966 g, or 29.7 kg. Diesel in road vehicles (74.1 + 1.1 + 17.5) × 36 = 3,337 g, or 33.4 kg. Diesel in machinery (74.1 + 7.7 + 17.5) × 36 = 3,575 g, or 35.7 kg.
