Estimates of diet-related emissions vary widely depending on food choices. Research shows omnivorous diets typically range around 3–5 kg CO₂e per day, significantly higher than plant-based diets. Based on these factors, a conservative estimate of ~150 kg CO₂e per month is used to cover the full life-cycle impact of a standard mixed diet, including meat, dairy, and plants.

Calculation data and methods:

1. Direct Dietary Emissions: 3.8 - 4.8 kg CO₂/day
   This direct greenhouse gas emissions from the production of the food consumed. While global averages for general diets are lower, an "omnivorous" or "mixed" diet in 2026 typically ranges between 3.8 kg (Global/EU) and 4.8 kg (US/Oceania) per day. We use 4.0 kg per day as our base to reflect the increasing global consumption of animal proteins.

2. Upstream Processing & Logistics: 20% Uplift
   This "Well-to-Plate" processing, packaging, and transportation factor accounts for the energy intensity of the global food supply chain, including refrigeration, industrial processing, and international logistics.

3. Post-Consumer Waste & Methane: 10% Uplift
   Approximately 19% of all food available to consumers is wasted, with 60% of that waste happening at the household level. When food rots in landfills, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas with a significantly higher warming potential than CO₂. This 10% uplift accounts for the methane legacy of dietary waste.

4. Regional Variability & High-Protein Buffer: ~5 kg/month
   To ensure this product is "conservative" across all geographies, we add a buffer that accounts for high-impact protein choices (e.g., beef, lamb, and dairy) common in the US and EU.
