Calculation data and methods:

  1. Homes worldwide: 5.8 billion tonnes of CO₂ in 2024, 16% of all CO₂ from fuel combustion. Residential energy with the emissions from electricity and heat production allocated to the homes that use them. Source: IEA, Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Energy, 2026 edition

  2. Per person worldwide: 59 kg per month. 5.8 billion tonnes ÷ 8.14 billion people ÷ 12 months, population from the same IEA dataset. Rounded up to 3 units, the figure for any country not in the list.

  3. Per person by country: the same calculation for 150 countries. Residential CO₂ after allocation ÷ population ÷ 12, rounded to the nearest kilogram and up to whole units. 105 countries land on 1 to 3 units, Europe, North America and Australia on 2 to 8, Russia and the Gulf states on 11 to 16.   4. Cross-check: the Hot or Cool Institute’s 2025 lifestyle footprints put housing at 2.8 tonnes a year in the US, 1.7 in Germany and 1.1 in the UK, including construction; the IEA energy figures used here give 2.4, 1.5 and 1.0.
