I’ve felt heavy reading the news this summer: record-breaking heatwaves, wildfires and droughts, heavy rains and floods, wars and unrest. It's a lot! Some days I’ve just wanted to skip the news. But what keeps me going is this: there are now real, science-based ways to pull the excess CO₂ back out of the air. That is why I started Remove Carbon Today, so that together we can do something real about it. What is durable carbon removal?
It means physically taking CO₂ out of the atmosphere and storing it in a stable form, where it stays locked away for centuries.
Most durable carbon removal today is biochar, made of plant waste. When plants grow, they pull CO₂ out of the air. But this storage is temporary, and the carbon returns to the atmosphere within a few years after the plant dies. Biochar makes that storage durable. The plant waste is heated without oxygen in a process called pyrolysis, which transforms it into a stable, solid form and locks the carbon away for centuries. And when put back to soil, biochar helps hold water and nutrients better, improving productivity and supporting local livelihoods.
To guarantee the CO₂ is really removed, the end-to-end process is measured and verified, and then certified and issued as a CO₂ removal certificate in a public registry. And when purchased, the certificate is permanently retired on your behalf. Nobody can claim it again.
Carbon removal is already happening, not just promised. On the Puro.earth registry alone, one million tonnes of CO₂ have now been removed and retired - a milestone reached this summer, after retirements more than doubled in 2025. This is not a promise to reduce or avoid emissions in future. Certified, durable, ex-post carbon removal means the CO₂ has already been taken out of the air and locked away for good.
What is required to keep our planet liveable?
CO₂ concentration in the atmosphere hit the highest ever measured in May (432 parts per million) and is now over 50% above the pre-industrial levels. Around 900 million people in 33 countries had their hottest July on record, with wildfires, droughts, heavy rains and floods experienced across the globe.
Reductions alone cannot solve this anymore. We need to remove the excess CO₂ already in the atmosphere and warming our planet, and properly address our unavoidable emissions.
Today, the world removes about 2.2 billion tonnes of CO₂ a year, mostly through forests and soils. But land-based removal is slow to scale and it is not permanent - a forest can burn or be cleared, and the carbon returns to the air. So novel carbon removal with century-scale durability is needed on top. To limit warming, the global 2030 target for durable carbon removal is to grow from around 2 million tonnes a year today to 100 million by 2030. Fiftyfold in four years. And that can only happen if there is demand.
The global scale cannot be fixed overnight, but we can act on our personal emissions today.
What can I do about my own CO₂ waste?
CO₂ is the one waste we have not been able to properly address. We wash our dishes, clean our homes, and pay each month to have our trash and wastewater addressed properly. But CO₂ we've just emitted and left in the air.

And if 1% of us removed 100 kg every month, we would remove 34.8 million tonnes a year, a third of the global 2030 target for durable carbon removal.
